Henry Hussey
M, b. circa 1720, d. circa 1774
- Biography*: Henry was a Cordwainer
as well as an entrepreneur and landowner. The earliest record of Henry's land dealings is March 17, 1753 when he sold 120 acres to Richard Wilkinson for ten pounds, thirteen shillings and four pence.
He received a British land grant from "His Excellency Arthur Dobbs Esq; Govenor, and Commander in Chief, in and over the Province of North Carolina" on November 18, 1757. The grant was for 600 acres (almost one square mile) south of the Great Alligator Swamp and along the east bank of the Machapounga River (now known as the Pungo River) in Hyde County. In colonial North Carolina it was possible to obtain a grant of vacant land for importing people into the colony (called the head right grant) or to purchase vacant land from the government (a purchase grant). Even though the land itself was freely granted under the head right system, the paperwork was expensive. The granting process probably cost the average small farmer several months earnings and proves that some things don't change. On September 21,1772 he received another grant of 37 acres adjoining his original grant. Henry sold 300 acres of the land that he had been granted to William Gason for fifty pounds on March 13, 1761. However, the deed specified that the "Sapwood" on the tract being sold would be for the use of Henry Hussey for an additional four years. During his life time, Henry Hussey bought and sold several hundred additional acres of land in western Hyde County.
In September 1754, Henry recorded his cattle mark with the Hyde County Court. At the time of his death in 1774, the inventory of his property showed that he had 92 head of hogs, 16 head of sheep, 60 head of cattle and 3 horses.
Naval Stores were the leading industry of the region during this period. Several records indicate that this was Henry's primary business. He collected gum from the abundant pine trees on his land. The records refer to turpentine and it is unclear if that is a common name for pine rosin or if Henry distilled the rosin into turpentine.
Woodstock was the county seat for Hyde County from 1738 to 1778. In June of 1765, he petitioned the Hyde County Court for permission to operate a ferry service between his house on the eastern bank of the Machapounga River (Pungo River) and Woodstock on the western bank of the river. He charged:
1 shilling and 8 pence for a single man
1 shilling and 4 pence for more than one man
2 shilling and 8 pence for every man and horse
The inventory of his possessions after he died reveals a man of some means who lived above the level of most folks of his day. Of note are three wagons, a parcel of shoemakers tools, Fifteen plates, fourteen spoons and a cafe of knives and forks. In all there were over 150 inventory items listed including 3 tables, 12 chairs, 2 bibles and a parcel of other books, as well as Thirty eight dollars and a quarter.1 - Birth*: Henry was born circa 1720.

- Father: John Bartow Hussey b. 18 Mar 1876, d. 4 Jan 1939

On September 2, 1945 the battleship Missouri lay at anchor in Tokyo Bay ready to accept the japanese surrender. A few miles away, John and his squadron sat in their planes ready to launch should the japanese fail to surrender or try some trickery. This was how he remembered the end of the war.
